I was recently chosen to make portraits of the eleven female fellows of St Peter’s College, Oxford. The resulting triptych will be hung in the Dining Hall, alongside other portraits of important figures from the college. I really enjoyed this commission. The women were great fun to work with, and we made the images in front of a dark wooden panel in the college chapel. I aimed to emulate the old masters’ use of natural light, to create simple, striking images.
The master of the college made this kind comment on his blog: “The photos were taken in the chapel with a dark background and with no artificial light at all, and to me there is a certain Rembrandt feel to the outcome, which is highly pleasing.”
