Things I love about Hackney – Environmentalism

I met this very inspiring bunch of people on Monday at the AGM of the Friends of Homerton Station. They are all volunteers and have planted “wildflower meadows” either side of the station. On Monday morning they looked just fantastic. What a brilliant and simple project to improve the environment we live in.

I think that something people often underestimate about us city folk is that many of us do really care about the environment. In Hackney, I know tons of people who cycle or walk to work, or use the bus. I can only think of one or two who drive. Those of us with children tend to walk them to school – you need to live on the doorstep to be in the catchment anyway. Our houses are relatively small, and close together, so they take less energy to heat. We don’t need to drive to the supermarket because we have great shops on our doorstep.

So a big pat on the back for all environmentally-aware urbanites in Hackney, and especially the Friends of Homerton Station!
